Humans versus Animals

It is always assumed that honesty is one of the values that "good" consists of. But what is it really? What is honesty? Telling the truth? What is the truth? Isn't it just the thing that we say to somebody? We say "look, I am telling you the truth." Are you telling the truth when you are saying that you are telling the truth? Isn't that you are telling the truth is just an argument of yours?

Let's believe that you are really telling the truth when you are saying it. Does it make you honest then? Can you be proud of yourself just because you have told the truth? Is honesty a moment in our lives? Is it something that appears or disappears depending on our words?

I can say only one little thing about honesty; that it generally does not exist. I think that honesty is a link between humans and animals. The more people are honest, the closer they get to animals. The more they are dishonest, the better they seem humans. So I think that honesty is not a value that is inherent in the human nature. Well, I am not even sure whether something like human nature exists or not. But if there is something like that, honesty is not part of it.

Imagine that you did something to someone. You need to talk to her/him about it. You will either say the truth, or you will change the truth a little bit and make the reality seem more "bearable" by obscuring it. Or you will just find a lie and say it. And you are now thinking about which one to do. Very well, you have decided to tell the truth!

Well, even if you choose to tell the truth, you have just lost the chance to be honest in the paragraph above. Honesty is not a decision to be made in different moments. Right at the moment you think about telling the truth, you are obviously dishonest.
